Leo vs Roland! Champion Showdown!

When building a deck there is always a lot to consider. Do you want to go full aggro? Do you want to have the right answers and responses to anything thrown at you? Do you want your opponent to feel the pressure off your first turn at bat? 40 cards feels too little? 

Let’s talk about Roland and Leo! Just kidding, going to have to understand something first.

In Nom Nom Verse, we have to consider 2 different types of resources unique to the game. We have XP, Experience Points, and DP, Dungeon Points.

XP is the precious highlighter-geen resource at the top right of the card. They allow us to call or play 60-80% of the cards in our decks. Champions, items, relics all require the use of these Green Pips. 

How do we get them or generate XP? Good thing you asked.

Besides the champion you choose from your opening hand to start the game, there are a few ways to obtain XP to play cards. 

  • By Resting (tapping) a champion, when all ability points are used or before. 
  • Defeating opponents Nomster’s, earning the XP value noted on bottom right of card.
  • Some items that let you earn extra like; Grandpa Acorn.
  • Or Sectors, like Hunger’s Edge Lumber Co. when meeting requirements.

Dungeon Points, DP, is much easier to digest. You have 5 DP to use when placing Nomsters. Top right of the Nomsters you will find out their cost. You can use the 5 points in any combination. 3:2, 3:1:1, 2:2:1, 2:1:1:1, 1:1:1:1:1, you get the idea. Nomsters can never exceed the amount unless a card increases that total. *cough Zara Deena.* If you’re new to the game, you can only call 1 Nomster a turn, unless the card states otherwise; like Bugadon. 

Now that you understand XP and DP a little better or unnecessarily reminded. We can talk about Roland and Leo Draxis. These two adventurers, in my opinion, an auto include in every deck. You can only have a max 2 copies of each. Don’t have to have both, however I suggest 1 or the other. 

The cost of these Adventurers have a 3XP cost. Having one of them in your opening hand with another champion is super advantageous. There is only 1 other card in the current card index that can provide more. Do you know what it is?

Once you play any of these cards, guess what? Now you have an XP generating powerhouse. These cards are ready to use, no leveling required! 

“Wait, why is he excited that no leveling required?”

Since Leo and Roland do not require leveling. You can use the XP they generate at rest. Use for calling other cards into play or leveling up other champions. Some champions you will notice that they will have lvl.1-3 in the text box. In order to level those champions, it will require to spend the champion’s XP cost again for each level up.

Now you have 1or 2 less champions to worry about leveling, and can focus this resource on gaining an advantage quicker.

“Ah, I see where you’re going with this.”

That’s not all with these two champions. Let’s dissect each one. 

Leo Draxis – Adventurer

Comes into play with 12HP right off the bat. Has “Tough Skin” genetics, so each time Leo would take damage it would be reduced by 1. So not only is he pretty chonky, he also takes less damage. 

  • 2 Ability Points
  • 3 Move, 6 spaces when using 2 AP
  • 3 Power, to hit up to 6.
  • 1 Utility, to carry 1 active and 1 inactive item

Leo also has Slayer and K.O. abilities, when he defeats a Nomster or gets knocked out by one.

Slayer – When he would defeat a Nomster he adds +3 power to local Allies. +3 Power! Thats a huge buff. 

K.O. – When he gets knocked out, he heals local allies by 3HP. 

Let’s review! High starting HP, takes reduced damage, movement is decent, packs a punch. Added team benefits when deals final blow or gives your team a fighting chance for revenge when is defeated. Do I need to say more? 

Roland-1 – Mecha Adventurer

Comes into play with 7HP, alright nothing too high. Has “Focus” and “Genius” genetics. Focus gives a possibility to do 2x damage by rolling a 6 on a D6. And Genius lets him equip items for 1 less. Ok, not too special let me tell you more…

  • 3 Ability Points
  • 3 Move, 9 spaces total, 33% of the of sectors. 
  • 1 Power, that tickles.
  • 3 Utility, 3 active 3 inactive.

Roland also has special abilities. He cannot be stunned. For 1 ability point, he can use “Raise the Shields.” The next damage dealt to this card is now reduced to 0. And for every equipped item he gets +1HP. 

Yup, he’s a moving wall. He can easily move across the sectors and get in close and personal. Once next to the Nomsters he can be a menace. As you equip him he gets more health.

So imagine sticking on Jet Pack, Dino Blood, and Buzz Saw on Roland. This would give him an extra +4 Power, +4 Move, +5 HP, and Flying. For He would be able to move 21 spaces and can only be attacked by flying, reach or ranged. Yes 21 spaces… Can hit for 15… And has 12HP, but don’t forget next damage he takes could be 0. Keep healing him and… you get the picture.

Your wall just turned in into a war machine. He could get close to the opponents Kaiju and kiss it on the forehead before it knew what was happening. 

Well that is my take on these two champs. XP Generators and Support turned Threat if not dealt with. Will you choose to include them into your deck or not is up to you.
