Character and Nomster lore have been shared on the NomNom Discord, and give us our first look at the stories behind what we have seen so far!
“Crocopossum, the Crocodilian Marsupial is a well-documented Nomster hailing from the rocky peaks of the Spine, west of Mount City. Having a wide array of talents, Crocopossums find ways to thrive in almost any landborn environment they’re exposed to. Although they are capable of swimming (and quite good at it), most sub-species prefer to live above ground in caves or nesting in treetop canopies, where they raise their young and survive mostly on a diet of fresh fruit, Dino Eggs and Horned Flies.
Crocopossums are observably intelligent and tend to move as a pack, treasuring their family units and taking great care of the elder Crocopossums in the group; who are allowed to eat first and are kept central as the pack moves. Should an elder start to fall behind, there are always one or two young adults in the rear to help them catch back up and keep them safe. In the past 30 years, Crocopossum populations in Mt. City have increased rapidly… to the point that they’re being poached and treated like a nuisance by locals. Biologists who are aware of their intelligence are working diligently to see how Crocopossums can be more effectively integrated into society, perhaps even domesticated or trained for labor… but a real solution has yet to be found. Although Crocopossums tend to have a mild disposition, threaten one of their group and you’ll be surrounded before you can say “Nomicron”, and trust me, those claws are razor sharp!” — excerpt from “A Critical Critter Census“, by famed Biologist and Adventurer, Alton Corsair
Peanut, the Runty Kaiju had a tough upbringing. Being born smaller than his brothers and sisters meant that Peanut was constantly teased and treated like a punching bag by Kaiju much larger than himself. Keeping one growing Kaiju moderately well-fed is a hard task, but feeding a whole family of Kaiju is nearly impossible out in the barren mountains of the Spine… something had to give. Eventually, desperate and out of their minds with hunger, Peanut’s family turned on him one night and attacked him in his sleep. Forced to stand against the family who had neglected him for so many years, Peanut found a strength inside himself that he’d never felt before; like a force of nature, a crackling bolt of lightning that wouldn’t be stopped by anything or anyone.
High in the mountains, in the midst of a raging thunderstorm, Peanut fought his 3 brothers, his mother and his father… and won. Finally, he was free. As he laid, panting, against a wet boulder, recovering in the cool rain, Peanut noticed the colorful lights of Mt. City glowing in the distance and something told him that his path would lead there next. He would go there soon… very soon. Just, maybe a few more moments here… — and before he could finish the thought, Peanut was asleep. A deep, resting sleep like he hadn’t gotten in years; the adventure could start in the morning.
